Road Crashes Could Kill 65,000 Nigerians by 2030, Warns Ex-FRSC Chief Chidoka
A former head of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osita Chidoka, has issued a stark warning that without urgent government intervention, road accidents could claim as many as 65,000 lives by 2030.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Chidoka said that if road safety is not prioritized, especially in high-risk highway corridors, the death toll will continue rising.
He stressed that while the FRSC plays a critical role, broader responsibility lies with the Ministry of Works. Chidoka urged the government to allocate funds from its existing road budget to modernize and ‘future-proof’ at least five to ten major highway corridors.
Chidoka also expressed optimism that the country could reach a “Vision Zero” goal, meaning zero fatalities, but only if safety becomes a national priority.
His warning comes amid growing alarm about escalating road traffic deaths. Data from the FRSC and other road-safety advocates show a troubling increase in fatal crashes across Nigeria.
