Russo Brace Inspires Arsenal Women to Comeback Win Over Real Madrid
Alessia Russo starred for Arsenal Women as she scored twice to help her side overturn a deficit and beat Real Madrid Women 2–1 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Real Madrid had taken the lead just before halftime thanks to a well‑struck volley from former Gunner Caroline Weir.
Arsenal, under pressure after a poor run of form, came out stronger in the second half.
In the 53rd minute, Russo rose to head in an equaliser from a Chloe Kelly cross.
Fourteen minutes later, she converted again, this time from a corner delivered by substitute Beth Mead, to give Arsenal the lead.
Arsenal manager Renée Slegers praised the team’s composure, saying they stayed calm despite going behind and executed their game plan well in the second half.
Russo described the win as “really important,” noting it comes at a crucial moment in their Champions League campaign.
Real Madrid’s Weir admitted her team didn’t do enough after the break, while highlighting that they created some chances but couldn’t hold on.
The victory provides a timely boost for Arsenal, improving their hopes of advancing from the group stage and easing some of the mounting pressure on their season.
