President Buhari sacks NIPC boss, citing incompetence and mismanagement: A look back at the controversy surrounding her previous dismissal

President Goodluck Jonathan had previously sacked Saratu Umar, the executive secretary of the Nigeria Investment Promotion Council (NIPC), following allegations of “gross incompetence, high-handedness, and staff intimidation”. Uju Hassan-Baba was appointed as Umar’s replacement in the wake of the sack.

Later on, the newly appointed President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), reappointment  Hajiya Saratu Umar again as the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the NIPC.

Recently, the President of Nigeria, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has terminated the appointment of Hajiya Saratu Umar as the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) with immediate effect. This news comes just a week after a report that exposed faults in the Commission’s administration and linked the challenges to Umar’s “incompetence and mismanagement.”

The termination of Umar’s appointment was confirmed by Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, in a statement on Thursday evening titled ‘President Buhari terminates appointment of Saratu Umar as NIPC boss.’

It remains unclear who will succeed Umar, but the decision to terminate her appointment is a clear indication of the Buhari-led government’s determination to tackle corruption and inefficiency in government agencies.
