Godfather of AI” Geoffrey Hinton Resigns from Google Citing Concerns About Dangers of AI Developments

Geoffrey Hinton, widely regarded as the “godfather” of artificial intelligence (AI), has resigned from his job at Google, citing concerns about the growing dangers posed by AI developments.

In an interview with the BBC, Hinton said that AI chatbots could soon overtake humans in intelligence, and that some of the dangers associated with AI were “quite scary”. He also expressed concern about “bad actors” who could use AI for nefarious purposes.

Hinton’s pioneering work on neural networks and deep learning has paved the way for current AI systems such as ChatGPT. Google’s chief scientist, Jeff Dean, said the company remained committed to a responsible approach to AI.
