In preparation for the upcoming presidential inauguration of Bola Tinubu on May 29, the National Security Adviser (NSA), retired Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno, held a World Press Conference in Abuja. During the conference, Monguno appealed to Nigerians to utilize social media responsibly and positively during the event. He also assured the public of robust security measures in place to ensure a safe and seamless transition.
Monguno, who heads the Security, Facilities, and Intelligence Committee of the Presidential Transition Council (PTC), highlighted the committee’s efforts to provide all-round security during the inauguration. Security measures will be intensified at the Eagle Square, the venue of the event, and its surroundings. Additionally, strict security protocols will be enforced in and around hotels accommodating guests from both within and outside Nigeria.
Monguno emphasized that the committee comprises representatives from various security agencies, working in collaboration to guarantee a smooth transition. The committee includes high-ranking officials such as the Chief of Defence Staff, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the SSS, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). The Governor of Kebbi State also participates as a representative of the incoming government.
The committee’s main focus is to provide overt and covert security cover for all venues associated with the inauguration, as well as the hotels accommodating invited guests and dignitaries. To maintain order and safety, certain areas surrounding the Eagle Square will experience restricted movement, along with traffic diversions and alternative routes for motorists and pedestrians.
Monguno urged Nigerians to cooperate with the security measures and avoid any actions that could disrupt the peace of the nation. He specifically addressed social media users, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive online environment during the event. Monguno requested their understanding until the departure of foreign visitors, ensuring a conducive atmosphere for the occasion.
The Transportation Sub-Committee, Venue, Parade and Swearing-in Sub-Committee, Media and Publicity Sub-Committee, and Medical Sub-Committee have also made adequate preparations for the inauguration. The Medical Sub-Committee has arranged for over 100 medical professionals, including doctors and nurses, to be available during the event.
