President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Yemi Cardoso as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)

The announcement was made through a statement released by Presidential spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, on September 15, 2023.

This appointment comes just three months after President Tinubu suspended Godwin Emefiele from his position as the head of the apex bank. Yemi Cardoso is a prominent figure in the Nigerian financial sector, with a background as a banker, chartered stockbroker, and public policymaker.

He previously served as the Chairman of Citibank Nigeria and held the role of Commissioner for the Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget.

Cardoso’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in managerial and administrative studies from Aston University. Additionally, he holds a Master’s degree in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School.

Furthermore, he has an impressive record of serving as the former chairman of the board of Citibank Nigeria and as an executive leader at the Harvard Kennedy School Alumni Association.

Additionally, President Bola Tinubu has endorsed the nominations of four individuals to serve as Deputy Governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), each for a preliminary term of five (5) years, contingent upon their endorsement by the Nigerian Senate. The nominees are:

  1. Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro
  2. Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo
  3. Mr. Philip Ikeazor
  4. Dr. Bala M. Bello

In alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, he anticipates these nominated individuals will effectively implement vital reforms within the Central Bank of Nigeria. These reforms aim to boost the confidence of both Nigerians and international partners in the reshaping of Nigeria’s economy, striving for sustainable growth and prosperity for all.
